home decorating, most stressful events in one's life, moving to another country, planning a wedding, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, why do women become bridezillas, Woody Allen
Three of the most stressful fatiguing events that one can go through are, in my opinion, planning and going through a wedding – your own wedding that is – moving to a different country – and by this I mean the endless bureaucracy that comes with it – and third, decorating a house. Of course that applying for college, an important job, or studying for a major exam are also very draining, but you get over them easier.
A wedding is a beautiful thing, a precious memory that will be treasured forever. But people! I seriously advice you to simply get married on the beach or elope. I know it for a fact that the bride and groom don’t really get to enjoy their own wedding to the fullest, especially the overly emotional bride. After the experience of my wedding last year and seeing other brides as well, I can firmly say that all brides have the same symptoms. Stress, irritation, weakness, feeling that you are about to faint and about to cry. Actually no. You will faint and you will cry of frustration! Trust me. Basically, everything is tragically taken very seriously. Only after you have gone through the pictures, the church ceremony and the first dance, can you really start to unwind and relax. You plan a wedding for a year or more, and then you have fun for only a few hours. That’s unfair, don’t you think!? I almost feel like the need of a wedding is to let the world see that you are getting married, for the family to celebrate, for friends to get together, but not necessarily for you, because you are too stressed to even grasp what’s going on. Not only that, but brides do inevitably turn into some sort of bridezilla. And it’s only normal.
Moving to a different country is by far one of the most frustrating processes, because you need to translate, acquire, and apply for all sorts of paperwork. It takes FOREVER and it’s extremely annoying. I won’t go into much detail about this, it should be obvious.
Now…about the decorating/arranging a house/apartment…it’s one thing if you are living somewhere else while the repairs/improvements are being done, and so, you just come in, observe how far it evolved, and that it’s dirty, not finished or whatever, you proceed by going home, and waiting, and that’s that. BUT, when you live there and you have to put up with the presence of workers all day, with the obnoxious smell of fresh paint, with a beachy feeling on the floor from all the scraping and sanding of the walls – resulting in an unimaginable amount of dust everywhere and anywhere, that’s making you sneeze and cough nonstop – when you have to cover up stuff every single day so they don’t get even more covered up in dust, well, it sucks, to say the least. And it sucks even more when you are pressured to finish this ASAP, in a few days. One, because I am leaving for five months within six days and I’m the most eligible person to be in charge of this – I was told I’m a ruthless harsh patrona (boss in Spanish), which in my translations means I am on top of what they’re doing, making sure that it’s done WELL – two, because we ordered furniture that has to be delivered soon, and three, I am sick of it, I want it to be over NOW. I’m inhaling way too much dust and I’ve had plenty full days of furniture shopping and going to Home Depot about a thousand times. I’m DONE. Ce-i mult strica, a Romanian maxim would say, which would translate into enough is enough.
I bought a ticket for Bucharest for the 28th. I am leaving that day no matter what. Hopefully, I will get over the irritability, the cold and allergy I’ve developed the past few days, complimented by this smelly dusty environment. And with a little bit of luck, things get done sooner and I also manage to get rid of the frequent panic attacks I’ve had lately.
Yesterday I saw Vicky Cristina Barcelona, a movie by Woody Allen. Loved it. I can almost feel my Spanish adventure…
